He pursued a career in legal services after graduating from Stanford Law School. He joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Korean War, for which he received the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, and two Purple Hearts. He won the 1967 election to the U.S. House of Representatives by defeating Shirley Temple. He served in the House from December 12, 1967 until January 3, 1983. In 2007, he changed political parties and became a Democrat. He favored abortion rights and supported stem cell research as well as Oregon's assisted suicide law. In his first marriage, he had four children. He died at his home at the age of 96.
