She was the daughter of Aline Burkett and Harry Vance Johnson and the mother of four children: Sandra Lea Oelschlager (Worth), Robert K. Morgan, Jr., (Ed), Harry Johnson Morgan (Nancy), and Peggy Knight Partin (Ken); seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved brother, Lt. Harry Vance Johnson Jr. who died in 1945, and her son, Harry Johnson Morgan who died in 2006.
Her love and devotion to her family as mother and grandmother was the primary joy and purpose of her life. She was a strong and determined woman in the old Southern Tradition and came from a long line of many generations of Johnsons from Henderson County dating back to the Revolutionary War. Her great-great-grandfather, James Johnson emigrated from Limerick Ireland and fought in the Revolutionary War and was given land for his service in Henderson County. Her mother Aline and her family came from Columbia, SC and met her husband Harry in Asheville when he returned form World War I in 1918.
Growing up she and her family were members of Central United Methodist Church in Asheville where her Grandfather Paul Jones Johnson "held the keys" and where her granddaughter, Morgan was married this past December. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Asheville for more than 50 years where she volunteered and where her sons, Robert & Harry were alter boys and where both her daughters, Sandra and Peggy were married. She was an avid Carolina TARHEEL basketball fan and shared her love and enthusiasm for over 60 years.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations may be made in her name to Givens Estates Resident Assistance Fund, 2360 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in the chapel of Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue with her grandson, Ryan Oelschlager officiating. A private graveside will be held at the Johnson plot at Riverside Cemetery.
