Abe Spitzer, a crewman on the plane that dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki during World War II, died Friday in an automobile accident in White Plains. He was 72 years old and lived in White Plains.

Mr. Spitzer was a sergeant and radio operator for the Great Artiste, the B-29 that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945. The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima three days earlier.

After the war, he was co-author with Merle Miller of the book ''We Dropped the Bomb,'' in which he said that the atomic bomb had made another war ''impossible.'' He was working as a sales representative in the garment industry at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, a son,and four grandchildren.
